We bought a brand new OPEN RANGE R 416-RLS in JULY 2011. This has become the biggest mistake in judgment in my entire life.

NOW, THE TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS:1. THE LIVINGROOM AC UNIT: The living room A.C unit caught fire on top burning *** through the unit coming inside. Had we not been home to turn it off right away, the entire camper would have been a loss. We were told, that O.R. bought all the discontinued RV Carrier units and put them in O.R. products. Meaning, we got a replacement unit by our warranty BUT it did not match and we could no longer use the remote control. A wall thermostat was installed and wiring was ran through the dish cabinet. 2. THE BATHROOM FLOOR: The floor in the bathroom became VERY soft around the vent...the vent cover and small immediate area around it, caved in when stepped on. It was fixed under the 2 year warranty and the vent cover replaced, although we opted to have all vent covers replaced with metal covers at our expense. Within months, it became evident that the wood that the foam was replaced with, is higher in height than the foam and the edges have caused the linoleum around it to split where the wood ends and the foam begins. Now, the rest of the bathroom floor has started to become soft. When you walk on it, you feel as if you could fall through it at any time. Warranty expired so they refused to fix it even though it was related to the 1st issue. THAT ISSUE BEING, IT WAS MADE WITH FOAM AROUND THE HEATER VENTS AND AC DUCT WORK WHICH GETS TOO HOT FOR THE MATERIAL CAUSING IT TO MELT OVER TIME.

THE CARPENTRY: After making our purchase and arriving to our first destination-less than 200 miles away, the closet rod fell, damaging the interior walls. It was LESS than half full of shirts, blouses and pants. Same trip, we noticed ALL of the drawers were coming apart. They were held together with what appears to be small thin aluminum staples. Again, not even half full. We KNEW we were going to pick up a new 5th wheel, so we lightened our load at home beforehand. My husband repaired these problems and has rebuilt every drawer and shelf in this Open Range.

THE SHOWER: We noticed *** the size of a B-B in the bottom of the shower. Upon inspection, it was thinner than an eggshell and it kept growing in size. We put duct tape over it to prevent water damage to the floor below. We took the 5th wheel to an authorized repair shop and O.R. had someone come in and "repair" the fiberglass. In the end, the color did not match, and within a VERY short period of time, it yellowed, flaked and peeled off AND several other small holes have been appearing constantly. In the meantime, the 2 year warranty has run out and they refuse to fix the pre-existing, re-occurring problem. It is obvious that they installed an inferior shower product that needs replacing and not repairing. They refused.

The SMELL: The odor from the black tank is so obnoxious and we are stuck with that quite often. My husband diligently empties the tank on Sunday...EVERY SUNDAY and quite often, he will empty it twice a week. We have tried every odor control product and trick in the book. He has gone through the unit from the roof to the basement and cannot find a problem...neither could the authorized repair shop. Twice he found that the cap over the vent had slipped down and he put it back in place but that was only twice out of too many times to have track of. We have come to the conclusion that it is somewhere in the bottom of the unit where we do not have access.

THE REFRIGERATOR: The door of the refrigerator was constantly getting marked up each time we moved the traveled. We thought it was because they kept coming open during travel so we put clamps on the doors, top and bottom. The fridge was STILL banging on the counter top during travel. When it was taken to the shop, they showed us that the fridge had NEVER been attached to the wall in the back thus causing it to tip over slightly with travel. Had the island not been there, chances are it would have fallen over. The icemaker failed and had to be replaced ONE WEEK before the warranty ran out. It is a full sized side by side refrigerator with icemaker on the door which is the main reason we bought this 5th wheel in particular. The door covers and the ice maker were replaced under warranty.

This is just some of the numerous problems we have had with this RV. The design and certain features attracted us to the Open Range. I just wish we had read reviews before of actual owners before we purchased. None of the problems we have had would have been apparent just by an inspection of the unit. We know for ABSOLUTE CERTAIN THAT WE WILL NEVER EVER RECOMMEND AN OPEN RANGE TO A SINGLE PERSON AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO DISCOURAGE ALL PERSPECTIVE BUYERS THAT WE COME IN CONTACT WITH. THANK YOU.
